THE ARTIST
J.H. Lynch remains an almost anonymous figure shrouded in mystery despite the fact that his paintings showcasing sultry dark haired exotic woman were once so ubiquitous in the UK that you could buy them at the local supermarket. Interestingly a popular rumour for many years was that he was not a he at all, but a she – a nun named Julia Lynch from none other than New Zealand!
In recent years these rumours have been disproven – J.H. Lynch was simply Joseph Henry Lynch, a British artist who died in 1989 to little fanfare. In recent decades as mid-century design has grown in popularity Lynch's luscious ladies have become much sought after artworks for nailing that quintessentially kitsch vibe.
